Sail
A Vie
Ericson 35 Mk II
#184
Redwood City, CA
Phil started windsurfing in
the 1980’s. He bought Sail A Vie as a home in late 1989 for himself
and his trusty cat Dink. He learned how to sail and keep an old boat going
along the way.
In 1997, Phil did his first Single Handed Farallones Race. In 1999, he
did the Long Pac and a couple of months later the Baja Ha Ha with his
girlfriend Joann and cat Dink. In 2000, he did his first Single Handed
Trans Pac using his Monitor Windvane as his only mode of self steering.
Phil sailed home with his good friend Bob with whom he had done his very
first race ever in 1993 – the Double Handed Farallones.
He sat out the 2002 Trans Pac although he was envious of the group that
was experiencing the magic of the great Pacific Ocean.
In 2004, Phil did some more work to the old girl and went for another
run to Kauai. He had some close competition being within visual sight
of other competitors for days at a time as well as within VHF range with
even more of the fleet. This made for an exciting and enjoyable race.
Approaching the 2006 Trans Pac, Phil looks most forward to arriving in
Hawaii to be with family and friends and telling tall tales under “the
tree”. However, after doing well in 2004 he says, “I’d
be lying if I said I wouldn’t be trying my best. But I will be happy
to make it there and back in one piece and have fun doing it. After all,
everyone who finishes this race is a winner.”
